Help me understand Hodgdon reload data

Post by mechanicus »

On the Hodgdon 300 BLK reload table, line 3 shows the max load for the Hornady 110 gr bullet w/ H110 yielding 50,600 CUP pressure. The next line shows the max load for same bullet with Lil'Gun as yielding 37,600 CUP pressure. Why is the Lil'Gun pressure 74% of the H110 pressure, yet both are considered max?

Probably based more on it being a compressed load.

Lil' gun is an excellent powder for the BLK, to me its every bit as good as H110! Dont jump me Robert!

What powder weight would be good using Lil Gun and rem primers with the hornady 130SP's and Nosler 125 ballistic tip's.Looking for accurate deer hunting load.Got lots of W-296 and H-110 also. Will any stick powders work as well as these ball powders.

Lil'Gun rises about 5000 psi at low temps due to high nitro content, so max for Lil'Gun at room temp is less than max for other powders. I would not steer away from it for casual use, especially if you have some to use up - but I would not specifically buy it for this cartridge - it is better for smaller handgun rounds.

300MP looks the most interesting.

I've been loading Lil Gun for 300 blk with 125 gr bullets, so far so good. I haven't had a chance to run it through the chrony yet, but I'm going to do that when weather conditions allow.

Is there some data posted for the 300MP?

I'm getting low on H110
