30-30 bullets for hunting?

Post by jbuck »

I am going to reload so ammo and I have been wondering how it would work if I used 17o grain or 180 grain round nose bullets made for a 30-30.

I would ASSume that they would be made to expand at slower velocities.

I know that I would be giving up some on the ballistic side, but I would be hope to gain some expansion.

Thoughts?

I would be concerned they would use up too much case capacity. The 30-30 has a really long neck. Better to use bullets people know work well, like the 110 V-MAX or 125 Nosler?

In an AR, you can't seat them out too far due to magazine ribs. So they will waste case capacity.

Also, they are just too heavy so will penetrate more than needed.

This would be better:

Sorry should have been more specific, its for a bolt gun and HAS to be loaded subsonic.

Or is that what your telling me, to load the 130gr to subsonic velocities to get expansion?

There is less than zero chance any of these will expand at subsonic.

There are only a few expensive specialty bullets that will expand subsonic.

I've always questioned the need, I'll probably never shoot anything with subs that I wouldn't be willing to shoot with FMJ. I just don't have a need to be that quiet that I would give up all that terminal performance.

The reason would be something like this coming after my dog.

I got him with a 22lr that I keep next to the door, but I would like to replace it with a suppressed 300blk and I would like a expanding bullet if possible.
