SBR Issue - Faxon 10.5”

Gents, on and off lurker but first post.

I’ve got an SBR with a 10.5” Faxon that flat won’t shoot. I’ve loaded subs from 200gr to 220gr and front regular soft points to round nose to long projectiles like the 220 ELD-X.

Velocities are consistent with low SD but it won’t shoot. I’m thinking it has to be the 1:8 twist and that I need something faster.

I was having accuracy (extreme spread) issues with a 10.5", 1:8 ARStoner barrel. Everything I read about the caliber suggested that long, slow, and heavy projectiles in the 200 - 220 gr range are at the edge of the stability envelope at 1:8 twist. I switched to a 1:7 barrel and the issues disappeared. YMMV.

Without knowing what “issue” you are trying to correct it’s hard to say, but most likely if it’s a true 1/8 twist there is not a problem I can think of that changing to a 1/7 will fix with the bullets mentioned. Since you can’t change twist without changing barrels, people who see improvement did not get it due to the twist rate change unless they are shooting well past 500 yards.

For most people true MOA accuracy with subs takes work past 50 yards. 1 1/4-1/2 might even be better than average results if people are completely honest.

I shoot a 1/10 twist and rarely see any sign of instability within 200 yards with bullets 1.5” or shorter. Groups under 3” due to vertical spread are not a lot of work after developing the first few. But a true MOA load that is repeatable every day is a lot harder to get with subs than people think.

I bought a Faxon barrel as well. My issue was that I had to send two of them back because the chamber was reamed way to long. I am using Pacific Tool and Gauge Go/NoGo/Field gauges, which seem to be the accepted standard gauges. On my first two barrels the bolt would lock solid with hardly no finger pressure on the field gauge and the NoGo. Third barrel was right. I wrote a scathing review on the Faxon website, but they only post 5-star reviews. Never will I buy a Faxon barrel again. On the good side of life, the third barrel is a nail driver. Consistently sub-moa out to 175 yds. When they got it right they did get it right. And yes I wrote them to let them know this as well.

So my advice is to verify the headspace of your barrel.

I have Faxon 10.5" barrels in both 300 BLK and 5.56, and the 300 is very accurate-bughole accurate-with 120 gr Rem OTM supers and average (2 MOA) with Rem 220 subs, both suppressed and unsuppressed. My handloads using Hornady 125 SST's and 208 ELD's are close but no cigar to the Remington ammo. The 5.56 barrel is also average with M855 and M193 meaning 2 MOA. Both of these uppers are using HoloSun 510c red dots.

I like Faxon barrels and have found them to be a decent barrel at a good price point, though I am sure that they have their lemons too, especially now with the huge demand for their products. I would try some Remington factory in 300 BLK if you can find some, as it is a known quantity and has a reputation for being accurate in the 300 BLK. Good luck.
