Speer Gold Dot 150 loaded ammo!!!!

Post by nolwark76 » Wed Apr 08, 2020 4:03 pm

Just came across this. Well crap, I'm on my phone and can't post a picture right now. Anyway, Midwayusa.com has it for $25/20 but listed as coming soon.Yes I handload. Yes its cheaper to reload. But I just really like having a stash of factory ammo on hand. Makes me all warm and fuzzy. After seeing the performance of this bullet in the hunting section, I can't wait to pick some of this up!

Oh I with you on buying loaded high quality ammo.

Specifically if I plan on loading the bullet using my own brass.

It gives me the Over all length that will function in a wide variety of firearms. no more trying different lengths under max length given in the reloading manual.

Right now on the shelf behind my press are several box's of high quality ammo, Speer gold dot is with those.

Here it is. I emailed them months back to make a 125 gr version. Would be sweet.

Don't know if I agree with needing a 125 version as there are 110 and 120 Barnes. Yeah, more selection but the 150 offers something else from the Barnes. At the muzzle, the Barnes has more muzzle energy but thats not the whole story. I bet the 150s retain that energy further, drift less in the wind at distance, and are cheaper than the Barnes.

Would have been nice if they put some powder under that nice bullet. Their own data has loads well over 2100 fps, they left about 15% of its potential on the table.

Still nice to have it on the market loaded.

2100 fps. Wow. Well, they have to make it for a huge variety of guns instead of a reloaded who SHOULD work up to that.

I, agree but its still frustrating when a manufacturer kind of misses the mark. They could have had a round with the most energy from muzzle to target. With the current velocity it won’t over take the 110 grain bullets until the past 100 yards, towards the end of useful velocity. Still a great bullet, just could have been much better, and many people just won’t see the potential. They could have easily hit 1975-2000.

Kind of like when Nosler came out with their sub sonic bullet where the low end of expansion is 1000 fps. and gives it an effective range of about 50 yards.

Yes, I will buy some if for no other reason than it’s what I have been pushing for since about 2011 and want to support the cause.

For quick reference, whats the minimum fps for expansion with the 150 GD? Also, if its safe to get the 150 GD up to near 2100, wonder why Barnes only gives load data for the 120 Tac Tx up to 2150? We can move that discussion to PM if you want for load data.

I would trust it to 1650, it still expands down to around 1500, but below 1650 it’s not full. Honestly I would have to look back at notes, but it’s all in here.

The biggest advantage of the Gold Dot is it’s shape and size. If you look at lengths:

Barnes 120, 1.25” including .120” of boattail.
Barnes 110, 1.180”
Sierra 125 SMK, 1.153”
125 SST, 1.048”
150 GD, 1.035” and it has a hollow base.

The Gold Dot allows the Most powder capacity, close to 1 grain loaded to Speer’s length of 2.180.

Speer’s data for that bullet has Lilgun maxed out around 2150, and 1680 around 1950. I would generally reverse those numbers. 22 grains of 1680 under a 150 grain bullet is generally good for 2100.

If you compare Speer data with Barnes 120, they are using the exact same powder charge of H110. Generally speaking you will get higher pressures with a solid copper bullet than a jacketed. Much the same as getting less pressure with cast vs jacketed.

So Speer has data that will push their 150 as fast as Barnes pushes their 120, and chose not to. Might have been accuracy issues. I have not been able to get 150’s as fast with 1680 as with h110 or Lilgun, but can generally get within 50 fps and have groups half the size or less.

Off the top of my head I had 1900 fps from a 8” barreled AR and 2100 from a 12” bolt action. I put the AR on dime at 100 yards after 2 sighters. Field bipod off the bench. As far as I’m concerned it is the best cartridge/purpose designed bullet I have worked with for the Blackout. I guess that’s why it was a bit of a disappointment with the velocity they went with. Ifnthe loaded rounds are MOA or better out of the box for most people, I would take that over 100 fps any day, and would gladly eat my words for saying they got wrong. I know the bullet is capable.

Took it back out today to the local range. It's actually 100 meters, 110 yards. Exact same load, Temp was within 5 degrees, shooting north instead of south. None of that should have made this much difference in point of impact.

The biggest difference was the target yesterday was in the shade, 50 yards into the woods. Today was bright sunlight and a fair amount of mirage effect. This is a 2" dot. 1" high, 1" left.

Here is yesterdays view of the target. The close one is 50, directly behind on the tree is 100, sorry bad pic.

Pics through the scope never quite work

Todays results, same zero, 10 yards longer. A long way to say shooting groups and shooting exact targets are just a bit different. Rebel has some insights into the effects of mirage on dope settings.

Lets see some others give it a try.
