as slick as these bullets are, I want more bullet in the case neck. even if jumping .050" is what it takes. One of my first bullets I used didn't have enough bullet in the neck, and would pop out and dump powder in my trigger and chamber.
Not worth it.

Was the .005" further from or closer to the lands?

He said JUMPING .050, Not .005. Big difference. 50 thousandths from the lands is what he said. That really isn't a huge jump for this or any cartridge.

Re: Speer Gold Dot 150 BLK
I wanted the bullet further INTO the neck of the brass, meaning FARTHER away from the lands.

Re: Speer Gold Dot 150 BLK
heres my latest chrono results for loads using the 150 gr; Gold Dot. all were shot out of a 16" bbl. Bear Creek upper with an Omega suppressor. the C.O.A.L. was 2.145 using Winchester small rifle primers. powders used were A-1680 and H-110. I loaded up 10 rounds of each. depending how the Magnetospeed chronograph felt, each shot string recorded from 10-5 shots. here are the shot string average velocities:
A-1680- 20grs. 1870fps, 20.5grs.1886fps, 21grs. 1913fps, 21.5grs. 1962fps.
H-110 - 17.7grs. 2008fps, 18grs, 2057fps, 18.3grs. 2056fps, 18.6grs. 2066fps.
all grouped within 3/4" at 25 yds (probably would be tighter if not for my poor shooting ) except the load with 21.5 grs. of A-1680. it opened up to about 2"! because I plan on hunting with these bullets, I wanted the highest velocity. H-110 gave that and I decided to stick with 18grs. for my load because the 18.3 & 18.6 loads had more felt recoil with not much velocity gain. they also started showing bolt marks on the brass.

M.S. gives 1850 avg for the GD in 18" 1:10 barrel - 19gr cfeblk. I find the GD with (evidently) softer jacket is not as accurate as the 150SPP from hornady.
Re: Speer Gold Dot 150 BLK
You might try about 3 more grains of powder if you're going to use CFE.
I find 1/2-3/4 MOA more than adequate for a hunting bullet, are you saying you get better than that with the Hornady?

Dellet,
You loading them at 2.180 in your loads? I am running 19.9gr in my 10.5" and it does fine, but I am not opposed to going higher, just need to order another couple of boxes of them.

I would have to look at notes. I did not spend much time with CFE because it really is velocity challenged. If you use mid to high 1680 data as a starting load you will be close. Case capacity for CFE is almost a full grain more than 1680 and it's lower pressure. By that I mean if an empty case holds 24 grains of 1680, it will hold 25 of CFE.GregP42 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 4:05 pmDellet,

CFE works really well compressed and do to it's low pressure, it's hard to get in trouble with.
I would start with the bullet just above the bottom of the neck, about .200" deep. bullet length+case length-.200" = COL. A wild guess would put the charge weight around 21 grains for 105% density. but I can't put that load data in writing. This might give you a better idea since it's tested, published data. the 150 Spitzer is seated about .290" deep. I try to keep at least .150" bearing surface in the neck.
I could load a couple tonight and get some real numbers, might even be in the first few pages of this thread

Re: Speer Gold Dot 150 BLK
Greg I loaded 21.5gr of cfeblk at 2.204coal for my 10.5" barrel. I'm getting getting 1" and under at 100yrds. 21grs was almost identical. I'm not sure I can shoot much better than that with such a light gun and milspec trigger. It's really just for proof of concept because I'm just going to put a red dot on it after I'm done playing with the reload part. I know I don't need to say it but as with all internet advice, this is working for me but doesn't mean it's safe for everyone. I still haven't broken out the chronograph to test any of the loads I've tried.
