Barnes 110gr TAC-TX Velocity

Post by SovereignJohn »

I have a 10" 1:7 twist barrel with a pistol length gas system on an AR-15 pistol.

I took some velocity readings of the Barnes 110gr TAC-TX factory ammo (the black tips) with a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph at 10 feet. Average was 2182.9 fps from 7 shots. The spread was 51 fps, with a standard deviation of 17.3.

51 fps seems like a big spread. The highest velocity was 2202 and the lowest was 2151 fps. I'm curious how typical that is? Any thoughts on wether it is the ammo, the chrono or the gun?

From all of the working up of loads I have done with the 300BLK I am not worried about a 51fps ES in supers at all. As long as the shots are consistent and accurate and your ES doesn't go too crazy I believe 51fps ES will be fine for you supersonic in this cartridge and you may be able to just about cut that in half if you hand load.

Nope, YOUR just able to hit 100fps FASTER. ;)

That's the TOP velocity I can achieve with this rifle, load and components.

I posted this in a different thread, thought it was here, but........

When these first came out a few of us did a lot of testing with these and I think Barnes at the time even published 2450 as a max velocity. What we found was over 2400 the petals would shear off in tissue. Over 2500 some would come apart in flight. Over 2600 most came apart under 200 yards.

So having an accurate load around 2400, is just about all the faster you would want, unless you know you'll be shooting over 50 yards or whatever

2400 sounds like a great velocity for these bullets. :)

Anyone ever try to push the 120gr barnes black tips?
