All-
I'm hopping on the AR pistol bandwagon, because I can, and I like the idea of a a short, handy AR that I can take when I travel home to visit family without the hassle of the SBR, or toss in my trunk without worrying about the problems associated with having an NFA weapon go missing. Yes, I own SBRs already (one of which is a Noveske 10.5 that cycles everything with or without a can), and yes, I am intending to build a pistol and not shoulder it, and yes the AR pistol is legal in all locations I may travel with it.
I'm looking for suggestions for parts, particularly barrels and gas system components. I'm THINKING 8-9 inches of barrel, and I want to keep the build light. I am running Barnes Black Tip supers as my round of choice out of my 10.5, and I would probably use that load in this pistol as well. I want it to run this round reliably without a can, and maintain enough velocity for terminal performance (from my research, not a problem, but I am curious to hear your thoughts). Working with subs and a can would be bonuses, but my primary emphasis for THIS gun is unsuppressed supers, while being light and short.
Does the 300BLK Hive Mind have a suggestion for a barrel length/setup for this?
Thanks,
Mike

I've had great results from my 9" Ballistic Advantage Performance barrel in 9" flavor . Great prices from http://www.righttobear.com/

I'm painting what you're priming.
I'm the same. I have a 300 AR15 SBR. I also have two AR pistols (one 10.5" 5.56 and a 7" 9mm).
I think you are dead on track for barrel length. Anywhere in the 8" range is a good choice and should be reliable with the supers you choose, plus be capable of slinging some fat, slow ones.

You were not joking, those are some good prices! The 10 in barrel was actually cheaper than the 9 in. What kind of accuracy were you getting out of those barrels.Roverhound wrote:I've had great results from my 9" Ballistic Advantage Performance barrel in 9" flavor . Still working on loads for it but I have no trouble getting 1" groups at 50 yards with a red dot.TexasEric wrote:You were not joking, those are some good prices! Just joined because I'm on a similar quest. I've stayed away from 300 BO till now trying to keep ammo standardized but shot somebody's 300 suppressed SBR on my M16A1 lower a few weeks ago and was hooked. So far, I've purchased a Noveske 8.5 barrel and Chainsaw upper. I'll be interested in watching how your build goes because while I can run this upper on my M16, I also will be assembling a pistol for all the reasons you listed. Just too much about this round to like. Matt

8" seems to be around the right length for a short barrel. I would guess this would put black tips at 2100 fps. Plan on using an adjustable gas block. If your running supers you will not be short on gas.
The blackout in pistol form is an impressive little power house. My 8.5" with 125 gr tnt gives me 2050 fps at the muzzle.
And the math works out to over 900 ftlbs @100yds.
My challenge has been managing recoil. Mine is a little unpleasnt to shoot...a work in progress.

Also worth noting my 8.5" pistol gives me 1167 energy at the muzzle...almost identical to a standard M4 carbine shoothing 62 gr M855.

Are you using a brake/compensator?
I didn't think the 8" one I've been playing with was bad, but admittedly, I stabilize the buffer against my cheek. That has a $30 amazon comp on it and works quite well IMO
