Re: Well crap....
If you're going to switch from jacketed to cast, be sure to get the copper out of the bore. Your leaded gas rings are the result of gas cutting the bases of your bullets as they pass over the gas port. The base of the bullet is the steering end, so when it exits the muzzle, high pressure flows throu...

Re: Well crap....
Let's put it this way. Has anyone successfully used cast bullets in the 125 gr to 150 gr range in an AR with a 1/8" twist. If so how. Cast bullet RPM is limited to around 140,000 rpm. Above that you start to have problems. With a 1/8" twist that would limit you to a velocity of around 155...

Re: Well crap....
I would suggest trying cast bullets as large in diameter as will chamber. My one and only try with plainbase bullets was with a GC design, powder coated, but no gas check grouped about 2" at 50 yards. The same bullet with GC will print most holes touching, so I use GCs. IMR 4227 is a very flexi...

Re: Conversion Question
A friend of mine tried with the same parts a couple of years back and it didn't work.

Re: Loading cast Lee 160 grain
I shoot both the Lee C312-155 and the CTL312-160. My chambers will allow both of these sized .311" and seated to the crimp groove. Powders of choice are IMR 4227 and H110. IMR 4227 is more flexible in that it doesn't have to be run full throttle. Accuracy? Yes, ALWAYS less than 2moa, and usuall...

Re: The importance of headspace.
What caliber is that 44 ? 28-30 ? 25-25 ? Yeah, the big Unertl looks out of place. I HAD an early, square cornered 47 pattern 44 with Pope Barrel, false muzzle, and bullet starter. It was a 38-55 and I was afraid to shoot it, so it went to a collector. Speaking of big rifles and small calibers, I ha...

Re: The importance of headspace.
I shot a CPA based BPCR for years. At one time I had 3 CPA actions, with at least 2 barrels each. I never had a scope on any of mine, but the new owner of 2 of those rifles has scopes on them.
Your old 44-1/2 seems to have a short forend. Was the barrel set back?

Re: The importance of headspace.
That appears to be a 45 pattern Stevens 44-1/2 with about 30" of barrel. Lots of folks would ask why you don't rechamber for 22LR without knowing there is a difference in barrel twist rate from S to LR. You could find another original barrel to fit and likely reline, or send it off to CPA Rifle...

Re: Anyone shooting this NOE bullet?
I have shot a few of those loaded to 2.200" because of the tight throat in that upper, but could have easily loaded out to 2.230".
Loads were IMR 4227 from 9-11gr and all made round holes @ 50 yards from the 8" twist, pistol gas.

Re: IMR 4227 for supers and subs???
This thread seems to have drifted, but I'll add that I use CCI 400s for moderate loads and RP 7-1/2s for full throttle. As for IMR 4227, I've used it since 1977 and still think it one of the more flexible powders. In this particular cartridge it might not yield the absolute highest velocities, but c...
