Re: Questions about SB dies, sheridan and LE Wilson case gauges

[ Good that you got it figured out. I have a slightly related but slightly different question about the Sheridan. My empty cases fit perfectly and fall right out. The loaded rounds also drop right in, but some of them require a very slight tap on the bullet end for them to fall out. When I look at ...

Re: COAL not consistent with blems

The COAL difference is actually 0.039 difference max. I'm familiar with the Hornady data. I researched over 20 different loads to arrive at my ladder and that was the only data that was out of the normal ranges of what I found. It's also a different profile 150gr bullet. The Lyman AR Reloading Hand...

Re: COAL not consistent with blems

I don't have a comparator and I pretty much assumed that the difference was in the ogive of the bullet. it's definitely being seated deeper since none of the cannelure shows and normally 1/2 to 3/4 of it shows. So, are you saying that the decrease in case volume from being seated slightly deeper wo...

Re: Warm to cold weather bullet speed change

Your numbers seem right all the way around, it's possible that the bad readings were when you did the earlier testing.

Did you by chance change batteries in the chrono between testing in the summer and now? May be it was the readings then that were the problem.

Re: Gas Tube Alignment

I would worry about the affect on barrel nut torque. While torque can vary widely, the initial torque is 30+ whatever it takes to get the gas tube hole aligned. Depending on which way the nut has to be adjusted to tweak alignment, the torque could go below the 30 ft-lbs minimum. I'd rather not chan...

Re: Warm to cold weather bullet speed change

Nothing to be thumped about http://www.exteriorballistics.com/ebexplained/4th/56.cfm The study you cited as temps drop, so does velocity: The decrease in muzzle velocity caused by the 100 degree F decrease in temperature would approach 200 fps for rifles and 100 fps for handguns, with the loads lis...

Re: Warm to cold weather bullet speed change

The speed of sound will be at a lower speed. round numbers 1125 fps at 80 degrees and 1075 at 30. Most ballistic calculators will highlight that number in your settings if you enter the temp. Most ammo loses speed at lower temps, so in some respect your load gaining 100 fps should not have happened ...
