Re: cast .30 projectiles
The rule of thumb for cast is 120,000 to 140,000 RPM max. I think that Howa is 1-7 twist. So, that's 1167 fps to 1361 fps. Those bullets are pretty hard so you can probably push faster, but would want to keep an eye on what's happening. A 165gr bullet at that velocity is kind of like a Lamborghini o...

Re: 1/5 Twist and Supers
You remind me of my mortality. With a deep breath, I feel for your loss and sincerely wish you the best. Reminds me of a story. I was in a client's home that had just been destroyed by a tornado. There was a 2x4 completely penetrating the mattress of his bed. Luckily no one was hurt, but he looked ...

Re: Cartridge won't feed into chamber
If you're using standard 556 magazines … When I stick a Sierra 168gr BTHP in a 300 Blk case at 2.20"... and I measure it with a bullet comparator with a 0.27" bushing … I get 1.770" @ 0.27". Generally, for me, a measurement of 1.598" @ 0.27 would have already started rubb...

Re: Delving into sub-sonics
I've personally had 11gr of H110 squib in 38 Special. About 55% case fill. Then I read about SEE (Secondary Explosive Effect). I don't know that it exists, but there are better powders for subs. However single digit extreme velocity spreads are common when H110 gets near 100% case capacity. Great ma...

Re: Expanding cast bullets
I've used up the last of my life long free "mystery lead" last month. No way to know what it was, so I never worried. Granted, the only cast bullets I ever got to expand were shot at steel. They looked just like coins there on the ground... Now that I'm buying my lead, I'm just starting to...

Re: Handloads for Sig Rattler
I can get LRBHO with 8.6gr N110 and 9.5gr IMR4227 in the 5.5" Rattler. Adverse Gas setting (slope down and to the right from the shooters view). If a gun locks back with all 5 at a level and they haven't been keyholing, I put the suppressor on. So I don't have massive unsuppressed data. But I'v...

220gr ELD-X
2.220", 3/8 taper crimp
9/24/2016 - 8.3" @ 64°
10.4 gr A1680, Wolf 223 1003.5fps, 5.8 mad
Pretty close to 100% case fill.
I'd try IMR4227 now.

Re: Gas Buster Charging Handle BCM Gunfighter or PRI ?
I have a couple PRI handles, then Griffin released the SN-ACH (Suppressor Normalized Ambidextrous Charging Handle). I had to have a SN-ACH on my rifle. The big handles on both can poke my chest a bit on the warm days. Also the Griffin latch, latches the upper pretty aggressively, but a little fine e...

Re: converting measurement
An RCBS Micrometer is like 60 bucks. I'll rest my hand on my leg and hold the 'C' between my thumb and last three fingers. Then support the brass with my forefinger, feeding that brass and working the clutch with my strong hand. Using the clutch is important for consistency. You can flick with one h...
