Re: Best bullet over 115g for hunting?

On the Hornady subject, I was reading earlier the ELD-X(178gr) is also supposed to expand down to 1600, Hornady has photos of the bullet and gel after around a 1725fps impact. We know that the 175 gr SMK out of a 16" barrel can move at a decent pace to make major so if one could launch that ELD X at...

Re: Are you a Hunter? or do you just shoot animals?

Love this discussion, quite thought provoking so I will bring it back from the grave. I'm a weird one, hence my username. I certainly grew up a shooter just killing animals and only animals that were easy, only ever stalking Bunnies. These days I like to consider myself an aspiring hunter-gatherer, ...

Re: Best bullet over 115g for hunting?

Not being a fan of low sectional density bullets on game I am looking forward to seeing more real world performance from the new 150 Gold Dot. That would be my pick even without it having a proven track record yet.

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

Just stripped the bolt and actually took a look at what was inside: 4 coil extractor spring with no insert or O-ring. Now I have to track down one of the BCM upgrade kits locally, my LGS probably has it but I am not wasting 5 gallons of fuel for a $5 part, evil big box sporting goods stores and one ...

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

I should be able to borrow a gen 1 M&P15 sport BCG. I had wondered about that As I can easily actuate the full travel of the extractor with my pinky nail. That could very well be part of the issue, then the light buffer cause the bolt to hypercycle(more-so with lil'gun) makes sense to me so the only...

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

I have approximately .180-190" travel from resting on the catch to as far back as I can pull it it without compressing the buffer. Not the easiest thing to measure even with a dial gauge. Another .120 for the bolt face depth, so right around .300-310" The buffer was in spec for a C buffer at 3.0oz S...

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

It's definitely the bolt speed, recoil is extremely snappy with the loads on the milder end of the malfunctioning loads it was simply just the bolt moving too fast to feed, on the upper end the extractor not being able to hold it's grip the whole way to the ejector. With Lil Gun it did the weird fak...

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

Thanks again for the help dellet, After doing a few function test loads with CFE BLK it looks like I am stuck with lighter weight supers until I do some modifications to my configuration to slow down the bolt speed. Might as well load up some subs while I am here so I have something other than carry...

Re: Powder for heavy(200+gr) supers in AR

Make no mistake I am using a scale in the development, the goal however is a volume based load by a dipper. I have learned over the years scales are a major liabilty once you step outside the shelter of stick built reloading room. Should be no more foolhardy than to use a powder measure except there...
