Re: Gauges - Slotted vs. Non

This is an old thread, but I did not see anyone talking the cons of slotted gauge. You need to gauge the round twice when using a slotted gauge. Because of the slot there may be a case goof somewhere in the area that is in the slot area, etc. Do you have a slotted gauge? The reason I ask is that si...

Re: Hornady 160gr FTX data? Anyone have QuickLoad?

I have a very tight chamber on this rifle, if the neck is over .334 at shoulder I can't get the bolt to close with out a mallet it seems. Even though they all drop free of my gauge and look good there. I need to get the slotted version I think. You are saying you have the Sheridan standard gauge no...

Re: New Reloader, my very first problems

From a quick read on those gauges, that brand is made to chamber dimensions, including diameter, with a chamber reamer. So a case that has a base that is too large will stick. Or it could be the shoulder, or neck. If it is a loaded ammo gauge, a bullet loaded too long could cause the brass to stick ...

Re: Interesting Sizing Problem

It’s quite possible the the Sheridan is showing you something that is very difficult to find with calipers. Generally you need some type of concenticiy gauge. Let’s say you are correct that both the case and the gauge are .470” as measured by the dial caliper. The case should fit with very slight p...

Re: Primer pocket and neck tension

Doesn't anyone use calipers anymore? How is measuring with calipers "iffy"? Calipers are less "iffy" than some random $12 steel rod made by some company that doesnt have enough confidence to use a pair of calipers. Who confirms the dimensions of their gauges? Calipers only measu...

Re: Sheridan...is it absolutely essential?

This is a comment I see come up from time to time about the gauges. People say you can't get numbers off them. That is not exactly true. You could use it in basically the same way you use a comparator. The comparator requires calipers to get the measurement. you could get a measurement the same way,...

Re: So...bad rifle or just bad ammo (RARR)?

Starting with a bucket of sized cases on the right and an empty bucket on the left. With the Wilson I just pick a case with the right hand, drop it in the Wilson in the left hand, take a quick look, then flip the gauge over to drop the case in the other bucket. The looser gauge allows the case to d...

Re: So...bad rifle or just bad ammo (RARR)?

All my cases are dropped in a Wilson case gauge to check length after sizing and final polish. This is a very quick test and it's possible that I've missed a few short ones along the way. I don't use the Sheridan gauge on all cases, it's much slower. The AR will eat a short case quite happily, it's...

Re: So...bad rifle or just bad ammo (RARR)?

Solstice, I'm going to second rebel's advice. Every, and I do mean every, failure to fire I've experienced has been due to excessive headspace. When it happens I take the round home and drop it in a slotted Sheridan gauge. They always fall below the minimum. This is all handloaded ammo with CCI 450...

Re: New 300 BLK needs a double hammer-strike to fire

It fits correctly in the brass case gauge (sorry no idea what it is really called, you put the case into the steel tube and if it is proud the shoulder needs to be pushed back or the neck thickness it to great. If the case head is below level then the shoulder is to far back.) Is it a Lyman case ga...
