Re: Anyone using the CMMG 8.5" upper?
Yeah, because who needs concentric threads anyways. But in all seriousness that's an old rumor from a former competitor. In the interest of full disclosure, we have had 2 batches of barrels over the years that have had thread issues, the first batch the one that started all of this was about 5-6 yea...

All of our 300 BLK barrels will eventually be 1:7" twist.
We are in the process of transitioning right now.

Re: Bolt hold open problem
It could be a case of "user induced malfunction" in other words you could be limp wristing it, especially with no butt stock. This is some I've ran into with testing buffer and gas port combos with the sub-sonics, the rifle will seemed to cycle fine but not lock back on the last round, hel...

They can be.
I'd suggest purchasing the barrel with our low-profile gas block so we can make sure everything lines up correctly, if you go that route.

Our 8.5 Barrels are instock http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/85-300-AAC-BLACKOUT-Barrel-1857 Subsonic/Supers? with/without suppressor?... Should work well with all ammo, if you limp wrist the rifle with subs and without a suppressor the bolt may not lock back on the last round.

Re: 300 AAC blackout problem
Not to contradict Robert, but in some cases I've seen improvement in the cycling reliability when using a H buffer instead of a standard buffer. The heavier buffer made the guns less picky about the rifle equivalent of limp wristing, as always YMMV.

Re: any plans for a pistol SBR length upper
We should have a 12.5" multi-role(i.e. can be set up with a carbine or mid fsb with the pistol gas) barrel and a 8.5" here in the next couple of months.

Re: Subsonics out of 16" unsuppressed
It's not that it won't work, it is just not recommended.
The supersonic ammo will be way over gassed with a pistol port.
The sub-sonic ammo with the carbine is simply not 100%, certain loads, buffers, bolts and weather conditions can sometimes lead to that configuration being a little under gassed.
