...based on the pictures, I'd hazard a guess that it is possible the gas tube is the point of failure. Check to see if the roll pin holding the gas tube in the block is still there or if it missed the alignment hole completely and rode under or over the tube, providing sufficient friction to appear...

Keeps most everything subsonic.
