Re: What could this powder be?
The photo matches the Accurate #9 image in Quickload to a T. Even the tear dropped ones with the long tails. I'm still running Quickload 3.6. Latest version has powder images? Here's a photo I just took of Accurate #9, which has density about 15gr/cc. If you've found a photo that looks like the ori...

Re: What could this powder be?
http://www.ilrc.ucf.edu/powders/search.php Link is to Smokeless Powders Database. Lot of info with pictures. Your example looks a bit like Accurate #9, but VMD is not correct. Yeah, I went through that database and came up empty. I also have a pound of #9 and can confirm side by side it is not even...

What could this powder be?
As I noted a few years ago , SilencerCo's 220gr ammo is the most precise subsonic in terms of muzzle velocity variance I've tested – handloaded or otherwise. The powder is the key, but I haven't been able to find anything like it. It's a 10.0gr charge with a density between 7-8gr/cc. I doubt SCO cou...

Re: Lightest sub loads that cycle pistol-length AR?
From the link you gave: Rifle is a 7" barrel, pistol gas with a .098 gas port. Carbine buffer and spring or JP silent captured spring with black or white spring. T2 buffer will cycle but not hold open on last round. Load: 125sst LC converted brass 1.355" COL 2.10 11.1gr 4227 1050 fps avg. ...

Re: Lightest sub loads that cycle pistol-length AR?
I can't imagine any physics in which, holding all else constant , reducing bullet weight and/or gas volume could increase the impulse or energy to cycle the action. Then I would say that you have a limited understanding how powder burns, pressures are created, and how the pressure curves can be man...

Re: Lightest sub loads that cycle pistol-length AR?
Same reason I run a lighter bullet with faster powder and a smaller port. Basically you have compensated for a different problem with your rifle or ammo by adding more gas. You fixed the symptom, not the problem. I can't imagine any physics in which, holding all else constant , reducing bullet weig...

Re: Lightest sub loads that cycle pistol-length AR?
What is an "AJB"? It's obvious to me why one would never open a port past .12" on an AR-15: That's the inner diameter of the gas tube. I don't understand how you can get BHO with your gas block "almost closed." I couldn't get consistent ejection with 8.5gr VV N110 under 225g...

Re: Lightest sub loads that cycle pistol-length AR?
Yesterday I drilled out one pistol barrel port to 7/64". That's the diameter of the port on the gas block, so assuming everything's aligned there wouldn't be a benefit to going any wider. This is becoming interesting: The above-mentioned upper was by CMMG. The initial port size on that was 3/3...
